Where did all that data come from?

Here's something that really bugs me: when authors mention that they are using some "database with 1,000,000 data points" for some subject, then totally fail to mention what database it is, or how they got access to it. This seems like something that should absolutely be a standard part of the citations procedure. For example, I've now read several papers by a certain author (who shall remain unnamed) who, in every publication, does this, and it drives me up the wall. I can't even double-check his conclusions, because he doesn't say how he got all this data!

  1. Interesting... I feel like I commented on this earlier today, but maybe I am just out of it (wow). Anyway, yes, lack of data included or reference to data, IMO, is a big "no-no"... Good luck with it-- hope the curves are fitting well today!
